Prevent adding duplicates to a list
Maybe grey-out the text or background colour?

I tend to add items to my shopping list as I think of them - maybe when I'm reaching for something in the cupboard, and it's not there...
Trouble is, in the course of a week, I might reach for that item 2 or 3 times and so add it to the list, 2 or 3 times!
(And don't tell me it's my age! ;-)
Add keep device from sleeping permission
This suggestion goes hand in hand with the suggestion for more deliberate check-off items on lists in order to help prevent unwanted or accidental check-offs.

Merge lists
Saving recipes (into categories) and adding the ingredients to a grocery list
Would be nice if you could save your recipes and sort them into categories like 'deserts',.. if you want to cook one of your recipes you can just adjust the amount of people and then add them to your main grocery list.
Lock screen widget for iOS
with the new iOS 10 update and its update to the lock screen widgets being able to access lists and "cross out" items would be nice while shopping. The newer swipe to cross out is nice and helps with my mistakes but being able to have phone "closed" would take it a step further.
Allow for creating sub-items under generic items

Chicken Noodle 1
Tomato 3
Vegetable 2
Let me explain the above example. Using the new functionality of adding sub-items to an item, when the person adds a sub-item under Soup, the number of items for the generic Soup turns into a plus symbol to show that sub-item(s) exist under the category Soup. The person can add the number of items per each sub-item. In this case, one can of chicken noodle, three cans of Tomato and two cans of Vegetable.
This would allow for adding specific items under a generic item.
Ability to add descriptions/comments to each item.
Instead of having many different entries for something, like bread for example (white, wheat, grain, certain brands, etc.), the option to add a description would help various users from unnecessarily adding new items that only clutter the list since new items from certain people may also be uncategorized.
The comments should be visible on the list, and in a smaller font beneath the main item.
